Belief Modelling for Discourse Plans
نویسنده
چکیده
The process of communication between agents is originated by the need of exchanging concepts. In natural language dialogues, the speaker tries to express his/her internal concepts into words and phrases; the hearer’s task consists of understanding the message, i.e. translating back from natural language into his/her internal representation (‘language of thought’) [1]. This description underlines an important fact: when generating natural language expressions, an agent supposes that the addressee is able to understand correctly the utterances. In other words, the speaker makes hypothesis about the hearer beliefs. In fact, (s)he is assuming that the hearer believes that the terms used have a specific ‘meaning’ associated, and, most importantly, (s)he assumes to know which are the specific meanings held in the hearer’s mind. This suggests that the process of natural language generation requires an agent to hypothesize a ‘model’ of, at least, the hearer beliefs and knowledge.

متن کاملDRT Representation of Degrees of Belief
This paper investigates the problems facing modelling agents’ beliefs in Discourse Representation Theory (DRT) and presents a viable solution in the form of a dialogue-based DRT representation of beliefs. Integrating modelling dialogue interaction into DRT allows modelling agents’ beliefs, intentions and mutual beliefs. Furthermore, it is one of the aims of the paper to account for the importan...
متن کاملA Three-Level Model for Plan Exploration
In modeling the structure of task-related discourse using plans, it is important to distinguish between plans that the agent has adopted and is pursuing and those that are only being considered and explored, since the kinds of utterances arising from a particular domain plan and the patterns of reference to domain plans and movement within the plan tree are quite different in the two cases. Thi...
متن کاملConversational Agency: the Trains-93 Dialogue Manager
Designing an agent to participate in natural conversation requires more than just adapting a standard agent model to perceive and produce language. In particular, the model must be augmented with social attitudes (including mutual belief, shared plans, and obligations) and a notion of discourse context. The dialogue manager of the TRAINS-93 NL conversation system embodies such an augmented theo...

متن کاملFollowing the path to the gorillas ... or the banana tree: reasoning with nested beliefs
We explore features of communication which may be needed to support joint activity. We describe an experiment in modelling a task involving collaborative discourse which does not assume copresence, or mutual belief. The approach requires careful accounting within (nested) subjective models, and incorporates a system of evidential ranking to guide defeasibility. We derive a number of axioms in t...
